Prompted to investigate Lady Vess DeRogna's chambers, they found her dead and her belongings rifled through. She saw him looting casually before he turned to the scrying orb and openly greeted her, thanking her for leading him to his target. Eerily enough, Jester was prompted to scry on Mollymauk, wondering if the frigid place she'd seen him before might be near Eiselcross. DeRogna hired them to help her in an excavation, but they were in Eiselcross less than 24 hours before someone crept through her window and murdered her. The Nein did not encounter Mollymauk again until they were in Eiselcross, where they'd traveled as Lady Vess DeRogna's protectors. With Clay's help, the Mighty Nein saved their friends. They buried Molly and went on to save the rest of their friends, picking up a new companion along the way: a firbolg Grave Domain Cleric named Caduceus Clay.

Their first major encounter with the Iron Shepherds ended with Mollymauk's tragic death, drawing the party closer in ways they never imagined when they first met. When a band of slavers known as the Iron Shepherds abducted Fjord, Jester and Yasha, the party pursued to save their friends. A strange event at the carnival drew them into their first mysterious investigation together, and from there, the party found themselves traveling as a company, though none of them knew how long they would actually remain together.
